Today saw the second day of racing for 2017. We were fewer in numbers today with Just Danny Murray, Chris Wilson and myself (Alec) in attendance. With Danny and Chris both being Cat 3 riders it made sense for us all to enter the second race, so that’s what we did. I set off with the Cat 4 riders happy to take shelter behind other riders going onto Croft’s strong wind. With no one really wanting to work at the front, it wasn’t long before I heard Chris at my side as the Cat 3 riders caught us up. At this point the pace quickened and I did my best to hold position with the bunch, but this didn’t last long and I was soon off the back forming a gruppetto with two other riders. There is then a big gap in my knowledge of how the race unfolded which wasn’t filled in until the end when I caught up with Danny and Chris again. Apparently the Cat 3’s set off at quite a high speed chasing down us Cat 4’s down, Danny was still with them as they caught us but they accelerated at this point which caused him to be dropped. Meanwhile Chris coped very well with the pace and fought it out at the front, even getting involved in a five man break for a while. I was able to watch the last few laps from the side and there were two small break groups off the front of the main pack; Chris was right in there though with the main group. The escapees came through the bell lap out in front so Chris was left to scrap it out with the rest of the peleton for the minor places. Chris ended up in seventeenth which was a very creditable result in the conditions, and one that could have been different had he gone with a different break. All good learning though.
